New Re:Firm South Candidate Announced

Motala municipality and Kärnfull Next have signed an agreement to conduct a conceptual study evaluating the feasibility of establishing small modular reactors (SMRs) in the region. The study will assess technical, economic, and regulatory conditions, serving as a basis for future energy and infrastructure planning.

This initiative comes at a time of increasing interest in small-scale nuclear power in Östergötland. Several municipalities in the region, including Motala, have recently received government grants to explore nuclear-based energy solutions.

"Motala possesses many of the attributes we seek in a candidate site, such as strong infrastructure and an openness from the municipality," says John Eliasson, Head of Business Development at Kärnfull Next.

In parallel with the conceptual study, Kärnfull Next will independently initiate a more in-depth feasibility study, analyzing multiple potential locations within Motala municipality. This effort is part of the company’s Re:Firm South development program, with Motala now joining as one of the candidate sites.

Kärnfull Next recognizes the growing demand for stable and fossil-free electricity in southern Sweden. The evaluation of Motala as a potential SMR site represents an important step in the company’s mission to enable the next generation of nuclear power.
